1. About story:
This is a story about the wisdom of Confucius. Life is full of alternatives. You can choose the left side or you can choose the right side. The Alternatives of the Analects of Confucius applied this cultural classic to advocate that the diversity of alternatives can bring a wealth of colors and variety to life. I want to use humor to merge this ancient wisdom with modern life. The stories include the Chapter of the Toilet, the Chapter of the Weight Scale, and the Chapter of Brodie.
2. The motivations of design:
Modern people are increasingly unfamiliar with Chinese culture. Actually, they are uninterested, believing that the Analects of Confucius are just ossified doctrines. Worse, children are forced to memorize them in school, which backfires, causing a contrary reaction. Actually, this situation is similar to many people’s view of Shakespeare’s plays. Some English people never want to read Shakespeare as long as they live even though it is a critical part of their culture. Recognizing that the next generation is unfamiliar with traditional culture owing to different ages, environmental discrepancies, and conflicts between Chinese and Western civilizations, we have developed new interpretations and designed performing skills, employing vivid cartoon animations to spark a new interest in Chinese culture.
Since Chinese culture is gradually fading into obscurity, it is vital to enhance people’s impressions of the Analects of Confucius, to preserve traditional culture, and let it be the index and truth of how one conducts oneself in society. As a result, we rely on new interpretation skills to give it new meaning, without making it depressing and serious.
Eventually, we hope to make products with commercial value, which are easy to understand and have obvious effects.
3. The outlines of content:
At the beginning of the motivation animation, life is full of choices, you can choose left or right. How you make your decision is up to you. But the color of life will be influenced by each choice. The ancient Chinese cultural classic- the Analects of Confucius, helps us to make the correct decisions in our lives. If Confucius was the actor in this film, what decision would he make? Welcome to watching the Analects of Confucius multiple-choice questions.
3.1 The chapter of Toilet:
There is somebody in the men’s toilet, but the women’s toilet is empty. Guo-Guo cannot help but want to go to the toilet. If the role is your turn, you can choose to enter the women’s toilet or continue to bear the pressure.
3.2 The chapter of Weight Scale:
Lu-Lu thought that she is fat, so she took many weight-loss drugs. After a while, she wanted to know if the drugs had had any effect. Above the scale is a sentence “Gentleman, no weight, is not might”. When Lu-Lu stepped on the scale, it exploded. Gong-gong and Tsai-tsai were dumbfounded. They wanted to laugh, but Lu-Lu glared at them. So they did not dare. And then…
3.3 The chapter of Brodie:
Disappointed in a love affair, Lu-Lu wanted to jump from the top of a multi-story building. Huai-Huai and Sam tried to persuade her not to jump. After talking with them, she jumped immediately. Everybody was frightened by this situation. Huai-Huai and Sam faced this crisis and wanted to know how to make use of intelligence to settle the crisis.
4. Animation’s manifestation style: Stop Motion Animation (Puppet Animation)
Why do we want to do Stop Motion Animation (Puppet Animation)? Basically, in the U.S. and Europe, animation is very easy to do. Even elementary school teachers can use basic software and an ordinary camera to make a simple animation. Some schools even teach puppet animation lessons in order to stimulate children’s creative thinking.
The Idea of the story is critical, regardless of the media format, such as 3 Dimension animation, 2 Dimension animation or puppet animation. The question is: how to use animation to tell a good story? In addition, the technique of post-productions was one of our greatest challenges. Initially, the post-production stage was filled with setbacks, since our technique was unable to express our thoughts, but we solved each problem until we were satisfied with the animation.
4.1 Estimation of every form of expression:
3 Dimension Animation:
Estimate if a huge number of linear animations can be completed within a year.
Estimate if it can depart from the style of 3D.
2 Dimension Animation:
Estimate if we can produce effects different from ordinary 2D effects.
Estimate if it can succeed in combination with multi-media.
Estimate if it can be finished on time.
Estimate if the techniques will have a breakthrough.
4.2 The position of matter:
The story is vivid, lovely, exaggerated and personified. Referring to the animation of Disney and world stories, it combines the style of Chinese culture, adding fanciful elements, while remaining true to the spirit and the truth of the Analects of Confucius.
5. Object market:
5.1 The primary objective – Teenagers are unfamiliar with conventional culture but they are fascinated by vivid animation. After we changed the style of animation, we hope that teenagers will become curious about conventional culture.
5.2 The secondary objective – People who seek a more in-depth understanding of the traditional culture of China.
6. The settings of characters:
6.1 Lulu ( Zhong You, disciple of Confucius – action man):
He is brave, cruel, rough and rude. Knowing and doing are the same, and he is willing to work hard. Loyal to his friends, he studied hard. Brave but impetuous, he lacks judgment and has an uncomplicated mind. Faithful to his teacher, he was older than the other students. Born to a poor family, he knew what he had to do, but if he failed to do it, he would be afraid of a new task. Hope to unify knowledge and action. Lacking creativity in art and music.
Ideal: a militarist and a politician, he was perfectly firm and resolute, able to make instant decisions, and repent and reform. He kept his “noble man die, must wear well” bearing before he died.
Lulu’s personality analysis: Filled with enthusiasm, he would do whatever he had promised without delay, and he had good faith. He had hardy personality, and valued law and order. His anger was terrible to behold. Possessing great loyalty, he studied hard and was impetuous.
Characteristic of exterior: Sturdy with strong shoulders, a wide head and neck, protruding eyes and a jutting jaw, which gave him a rough appearance.
Favorite: Singing and dancing
What he hates most: Villains, he despises wickedness
6.2 Huai ( Yan Hui, disciple of Confucius – Famous for his moral conduct ):
Fond of learning; virtuous; matches words with deeds; refuses to vent his anger on somebody who’s not to blame; does not make the same mistake twice; draws insights about other situations from one instance. Suffers from poor health.
Having advanced his knowledge all of his life, he can apply the knowledge acquired from books to practical situations. His family circumstances are very poor,「He eats food with a bamboo utensil for holding cooked rice and drinks water with a ladle made from a dried gourd. Although he lives in a plain house, he does not mind, and he is always very happy.」
Aspirations – Do not brag about your advantages; do not ask others to do your work; and live a virtuous life.
Huai’s personality analysis: Although he is sickly, he loves to read and always has a book in his hands. Honest and frank, he enjoys quiet places by himself. His family is poverty-stricken, therefore he mends his clothes again and again. However, he has a philosopher’s temperament.
Characteristic of outward appearance: Skinny, tall and humpbacked with thin wrists and long fingers. He always has a worried look whenever he is not satisfied.
Favorite: Reading and thinking.
6.3 Gong ( Duanmu Ci, disciple of Confucius – A skillful diplomat):
Extremely intelligent, eloquent, discrete and quick-thinking, and he has an insightful nature.
Tzu-gong’s political and diplomatic relationships are very complicated. Numerous problems depend on eloquence, rather than sharp words. He possesses abundant knowledge and rapid reaction. After Confucius died, he went into mourning for three years and then three more years. He thought about his teacher’s statements and morals every day. The Confucianist spirits were very touched.
Gong’s character analysis: He speak like a sparrow chirping and his speech tone is very fast with a clear melody. Impetuous, he regards himself as everybody’s darling.
Favorite: Likes to gossip, talk rubbish, and band together.
Hate most: Just and upright men.
6.4 Tsai ( Zai Yu, disciple of Confucius – skillful debate ):
Silver-tongued, he has thinks quickly and enjoys showing off his mastery of words.
However, he is a lazy student, so he is described as “rotten wood can never be carved, filthy soil cannot be plowed.”
Tsai’s character analysis: Prone to bickering, he is smart in a small way, a man that says one thing but does another; opportunistic, he runs away from trouble.
The feature of appearance: He is fat with a big face. His mouth is huge and thick. His neck is short and thick.
Favorite: devilment and crowds
Hate most: gentleman
6.5 Shen (Zeng Shen, disciple of Confucius – Famous for filial conduct):
Dull, responds slowly, honest, introverted, plain-speaking, hard working, willing to examine himself, and filial. Although honest and serious, he appears to be stupid. Confucius says that he is a great deal of trouble. However, he intuitively perceives that the basic concepts of Confucius’ theory are ‘loyalty’ and ‘excuse’.
Shen’s character analysis: Dull, slow to respond, filial, lacking confidence and cowardly, he loves to sleep, possessing the special skill of falling asleep immediately. Honest, he is respectfully serious.
Characteristics of appearance: His body appears stupid, fat, and lacking energy. He walks at an exasperatingly slow pace and loves to wear sunglasses. (Because he has the characteristics of a trapped animal. –As soon as he sees the sun, he will die.)
Favorite: Sleeping and eating
Hate most: Exercise
